Bequest

A few weeks ago, the Belvidere/Boone County Food Pantry received a visit from a Boone County resident, who wishes to remain anonymous, who delivered a check to the Pantry in the amount of $10,000.00.  This visitor was carrying out the wishes stated in her deceased Mother’s will.   The bequest was a huge blessing to the Pantry at a time when our finances were falling short of what we needed to meet our budget this month. The Boone County area’s economical position has been on high alert during recent years.  In 2010, Boone County was placed on the State of Illinois’ Poverty Watch List by the Heartland Alliance’s Mid American Institute on Poverty in its 2009 Report on Illinois Poverty.  As of March, 2014, the unemployment rate for Boone County was 12.2% as reported by the Illinois Department of Employment Security; as of November, 2014, the rate is 7.6%.  This number is not adjusted for individuals who have exhausted all unemployment benefits and are still searching for work. Feeding America’s “Map the Meal Gap 2012” report measured food insecurity in Boone County, Illinois, at a rate of 15.5%, but children at a rate of 26.1% or 4,070 children.  We seek to serve all residents who fall below the poverty level income guidelines as established by the Illinois Department of Human Services.  In 2014, we served a total of 16,650 clients: Fifty-seven percent of them were children under the age of 18; and 11% senior citizens. Nine hundred forty-eight new families visited the pantry this year, thus adding an additional 3,132 dependents. Sixty percent of the total clients are White, 34%...
